CIV APP DRESS 5.2 TEQUESTA POLICE DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDER TITLE: CIVILIAN PERSONNEL APPEARANCE/DRESS CODE GENERAL ORDER: 5.2 EFFECTIVE: March 1, 2007 RESCINDS: PO 405.01 (December 4, 1997) PO 405.02 (October 1, 1997) ACCREDITATION STANDARDS: CFA NONE PAGES: 3 CONTENTS: This order consists of the following numbered sections: I. GENERAL GUIDELINES II. GROOMING III. UNIFORM CIVILIANS IV. NON-UNIFORMED CIVILIANS V. GLOSSARY PURPOSE: To establish grooming and personal appearance guidelines for civilian members. SCOPE: All civilian members of the Tequesta Police Department. DISCUSSION: Moderation and good taste in dress and grooming contribute to a positive perception of the Police Department by the public. Startling styles are out of place in the workplace and can be disruptive. POLICY: This general order covers the minimum standards. More stringent standards may be required depending on a member's position and the nature of their public contact. The Chief may waive the dress code at his discretion. PROCEDURE: I. GENERAL GUIDELINES: A. Clothing must be neat, clean, and wrinkle-free. B. Fabric must not be washed out, torn, frayed, or faded. C. Footwear appropriate for business wear will be worn. D. Socks/hosiery is required. E. Undergarments are required. F. Hats or caps are not permitted except with prior approval. G.O. 5.2 G. Hair must be neat, clean, and worn in a style appropriate for the workplace. Radical hairstyles and colors are not acceptable. H. Nose rings or posts, tongue rings or posts, or any other rings or posts, other than earrings, in or on any area of the body that is normally visible to the public are not permitted. I. Uniforms, when required, must be worn appropriately. II. GROOMING: A. Hair: 1. Males: Hair on the side of the head may touch the top of the ear but may not cover any portion of the outside of the ear. Hair on the back of the head may touch but not extend over the shirt collar. Sideburns must not extend below the middle of the ear and should not flare out at the base. 2. Females: Hair that extends below the lower back must be worn up and secured. If loose hair would present a safety problem, it must be secured. B. Facial Hair: A well-trimmed mustache or beard may be worn. A mustache may not extend below the lines of the individual's lower lip. III. UNIFORM CIVILIANS: A. When uniforms are required, they will be provided by the Police Department. The uniform shirt will be distinctly different than that issued to a sworn officer. B. Members must request replacement uniforms when necessary. C. The uniform will be worn whenever the member is on duty. IV. NON-UNIFORMED CIVILIANS: All nonuniform members are expected to dress in a professional and businesslike manner. A. Females: Suits, dresses, skirts, skorts, blouses and slacks will be permitted. B. Males: Slacks, shirt, and tie must be worn unless other appropriate attire has been approved by the Chief. V. GLOSSARY: CIVILIAN - A member of the Police Department whose position does not require certification under F.S. 943.
