Subject: Preservation of the old Jupiter Elementary School -Urgent
Dear Members,
Dr. Monroe Benaim, phoned late yesterday asking for the business community help in saving the Old Jupiter
Elementary School. He has been working for months on renovation plans for the old school to add additional
classrooms and provide an auditorium that would be available for public use.
However, at the Oversight and Review Committee .meeting Wednesday, a motion was made and passed to
review the cost analysis for the restoration of the old school building up to currentcode, etc. and to look at
alternatives (portables added where the old school building currently stands.) The renovation of the old school is
estimated at $4 million. Other schools throughout Palm Beach County that have significant historic presence
were renovated by the school board. Why should north county have to give up that historic building, when others
have been renovated?
Dr. Benaim is asking the business community to step forward and help save the school.
The Construction Oversight Committee will meet again on Thursday, November 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the School
Board building on Forest Hill Blvd. The meeting will take place in the Board Room. This is an agenda item
and the public will be allowed to speak. Monroe is looking for business people to speak on behalf of saving the
school.
If you would be willing to speak in favor of saving the school, please plan to attend the meeting on Thursday,
November 17th. You may get further information by contacting Monroe Benaim - 339.5151. Your input could
save this historic building.
On November 22, at 5 p.m. the School Board will meet to decide the fate of this building and we need get people
out to that meeting to put pressure on the council members to preserve it. I plan to attend that meeting, but will
be unable to be at the November 17 meeting. This is your opportunity to speak out.
Please let me or Monroe know if you can attend the meetings. Thanks for your support.
