A primary mission of the Sanctuary is the r~:~:cue, medical treahnent, rehabilitation, and release back to the wild of sick, injured, ;nc. orphaned wild animals, ranging from small songbirds to bald eagles, squirrels, white-trc]ed deer, tortoises, pelicans, and much more. At the present time, the Sanctuary pmvic!~~ such medical cart and rehabilitation for over 4,200 wild animals annually. Expenses to provide these services incluCie • Operating a dedicated wildlife rest ae /ehicle on a 24/7 basis. The vehicle includes rescue gear, protective clothing, tranc.~rilizing and medical equipment, and cages. • Rescue specialists who are trained .n ~vitdlife rescue tethniqueS. These specialists are on call at all times; they respon i ir. weekend and nighttime calls for rescue. • Hospital facilities, including surgery, ::~:U, and quarantine ward. • Rehabilitation complex to handle l~:r~;~: and small mammals, large and small birds, water birds, and reptiles. RehabiliU:ti~~a may take from several weeks to a year or more. Animals in rehabilitation m~~st be shielded from general public to facilitate an easier reentry to the wild. • Feeding of up to 500 animals daily doing their treatment and rehabilitation. • Maintaining facilities for natural h~bilat housing of about 200 animals whose injuries or condition preclude them from being released to the wild. These animals are used in wildlife education prog•arrui, our second mission. The Sanctuary calculates that the cost to rescue, treat, feed, and rehabilitate an average smaller wild animal is $250.00; the cost for. larger animals can easily be $500 or more. In 2004 the Sanctuary responded to over 2C0 r~acue calls regarding wild animals found in Tequesta. Many ofthese calls originates. f-~xm the Tequesta Folice Department, as well as other Village departments.
