t Safety Issue: Speeding on Village Blvd — Thursday, June 13th, 2019
We came before the council on Thursday, January 1 Oth, 2019 to share our concern for the
speeding occurring on the road unaffectionately known as Interstate Village Blvd. Old Dixie
Freeway, Tequesta Drive Turnpike, and US are other concerns. We received an update from
Officer McGrew on February 6th, 2019 regarding the black box and handheld radar data
collected on Village Blvd. He did exactly what he said he would do, and it is greatly appreciated.
Said data reflected average speeds in the 30s with some reaching the 40s and higher. This is on a
road that appropriately has four "Dangerous Curve Hidden Drive" signs. The data collection,
police presence, and speed trailer were appreciated but are not longterm solutions. The recently
added rumble strips on Old Dixie Highway and County Line Road are appreciated, but
unresolved issues remain.
We were told that speed tables on Village Blvd could slow down first responders. We
therefore propose crosswalks with "Yield To Pedestrians In Crosswalk — State Law" signs
(similar to what is in front of Guanabana's) at the entrances to the Publix plaza, Tequesta
Terrace Assisted Living, and Lighthouse Cove at Tequesta. Twice now we have seen elderly
people with walkers from Tequesta Terrace Assisted Living having to scamper across Village
Boulevard towards/coming from the Publix Plaza to avoid oncoming traffic, most of which are
driving at speeds that greatly limit reaction time. They should be able to cross the street safely, as
should all others in this residential area. Marked crosswalks are a step to help enforce this.
We would also like a to propose a three-way stop sign at Village Boulevard and Old
Dixie Highway. One does not need to be an employee of FDOT to see that there is a need to
slow people down on that stretch of road. The speed limit on Old Dixie Highway is 40 mph but
is exceeded by 10, 20, even 30 mph. A three-way stop sign would help to limit this while keeping
traffic flowing.
Lastly, we would like to point out that East Village Boulevard and US1 is an
accident waiting to happen. A traffic light and crosswalk is highly advised. You have people
trying to cross over and head north on US from east Village, turning left from south US onto
Village, cars making u-turns, etc. all while remaining aware of the bike lanes. If you try to turn
left onto US from east Village, the median is not even wide enough to cross halfway, so your
vehicle is left hanging in both the northbound and southbound lanes.
We chose to live in Tequesta because of its reputation for having high standards for its
residents. Palm Beach County is the fifth wealthiest county in the state of FL. Surely something
can be done to remedy these issues, but it comes down to whether or not there is a willingness to
act. We would like to see steps taken to resolve these issues before someone is hurt or killed.
Sincerely,
