HomeMy WebLinkAboutHandouts_Regular_03/12/2009 Any Other MattersAn open letter to the residents of Tequesta concerning the property on the northeast
intersection of Village Blvd. and Old Dixie Hwy., from Councilman Jim Humpage.
Over the past weeks I have had numerous calls and a-mails concerning the above
mentioned property. I write this letter in hopes of clearing the air of false rumors and let
the truth be known. A letter entitled "Urgent Message To All Village Residences" is
being circulated in various areas by a person or persons unknown, which are at the least
"uninformed". Hopefully my remarks will bring everyone up to speed.
First, the Village is looking into purchasing the property but that may or may not occur
depending on many circumstances. The property consists of two parcels, the southern
parcel with the large building on it and the northern parcel which has been partially
developed. The property has been in the condition you view for approximately eight
years. The property continues to degrade.
Second, the Veterans Administration has expressed an interest in opening a facility for
particular veterans in the north section of Palm Beach County to serve Palm Beach,
Martin and Saint Lucie Counties. Their thought is to lease a structure. Will this building
meet their criteria? Only the VA knows and at present that has not been decided.
Contrary to rumor, the VA has two uses for such a venue. They would like a 60 to 80
bed facility that would treat returning veterans for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These
honored veterans are not Substance Abusers or would the facility be a Drug
Rehabilitation Clinic as the "Urgent Message" would have you believe. Many of these
veterans are treated as out patients and hold full time jobs. The VA is also considering a
20 bed area as a Hospice Unit for those veterans who are soon to leave us. If this were to
come to fruition, many meetings and conversations would have to occur before a final
decision was made. You as residents would be kept well informed and your input would
be expected.
Thirdly, if the VA found accommodations elsewhere, other considerations for the
property are very possible. Our water plant abuts the northern parcel of the property.
Perhaps an extension of our well field or a passive park could be considered. The list is
endless but most anything would be an improvement on the condition of the property as it
exists. Village Council and Staffs primary interest is that which is best for our residents.
Do not be influenced by rumor, I as any Council Member will be happy to speak or meet
with you at any time.
In closing I would just like to say on a personal note and as a former vet myself, I would
find helping our returning solders an honor. Through their giving we are free to enjoy
such unique areas as the Village of Tequesta.
Respectfully,
Councilman Jim Humpage
