This fundraising campaign gives our local citizens an opportunity to give something back to our community by helping the American Red Cross continue with its life-saving mission. For more than 90 years, the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has been providing programs and services for our growing community and tending to the needs of thousands of people. Red Cross volunteers have helped victims of hurricanes, tropical storms, fires, tornadoes and floods, in addition to teaching many water safety skills, First Aid and CPR/AED courses. "Heroes for the American Red Cross" is a volunteer-led, community-based fundraising and awareness campaign that runs for six weeks from April 16 -June 5, 2009. During this campaign, a "HERO for the American Red Cross" is an individual or a group who commits to raising or donating a minimum of $1,000. Money raised during this campaign stays locally and will ensure that the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter has sufficient funds to respond to a local disaster and provide vital programs that meet the communities' most urgent needs. You can help by becoming a sponsor of this year's HEROES Campaign. Your contribution will go directly to our programs and services in the local area. Your generous gift will be recognized in local media coverage, at the kick-off celebration on April 16~'° and the wrap-up celebration on June 5`~, 2009. More importantly, you will share the pride in knowing that your contribution will help save a life! This year, your support is needed more than ever. The American Red Cross is in a state of fmancial emergency due to the 2004 and 2005 years filled with devastating hurricanes, and currently we are still funding disaster relief related to this 2008 Hurricane Season. You may not realize that though mandated by Congress to lead and organize disaster relief, the Red Cross does not typically receive government funding. Instead, American Red Cross programs and services are supported by the generosity of people like you! Please review the enclosed levels of sponsorship and contact Melissa Perzanowski at perzano~> skim!c%redcross- bc.or~, 561-746-1532 (office) or 561-718-5449 (cell) to discuss the details of your commitment. I thank you for your time and consideration! North County Service Center Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter "What can I say?" I asked myself over and over again as I drove to the scene of a tragic fire. A man had just lost his wife, two of his four children, and his father-in-law. Words would be difficult. When I knelt by his chair, I realized I did not have to say a word. The simple Red Cross on my name badge said it all: his two surviving children would have a place to stay, food to eat, and clothes to wear. It is a good feeling to know the Red Cross is there. Local Disaster Caseworker When you raise $1,000 for the 2009 HEROES for American Red Cross Campaign, your money touches the lives of local individuals and families. Here are just a few ways $1,000 can help members of our community: • $1,000 will provide 571 comfort kits full of personal care items for disaster victims who have lost their homes. • $1,000 will provide 198 blankets or 37 cots for disaster victims who must spend the night in a shelter. • $1,000 will provide groceries for 8 families who have lost their homes to fires or natural disasters. • $1,000 will provide shoes and clothing for 2 families of four who have lost their homes to fires. • $1,000 will provide hotel lodging for 6 families who lost their homes to fires or natural disasters. • $1,000 will provide 11,750 disaster preparedness brochures so local community members can learn how to create a family disaster plan and build a disaster supply kit. • $1,000 will provide the "Masters of Disaster" disaster preparedness course for 28 elementary or middle school classrooms so children understand how to stay safe in an emergency. • $1,000 will provide materials to train 200 disaster volunteers to be ready to respond to local and national emergencies. • $1,000 will provide CPR and First Aid training for 29 disaster volunteers. • $1,000 will provide 1 disaster nursing kit filled with items needed to provide disaster health services to shelter occupants. • $1,000 will provide training and supplies for 60 youth volunteers. Though chartered by Congress to help people prevent, prepare for, and cope with disaster, the American Red Cross is not funded as a government agency. Every year, our neighbors rely on the Red Cross to see them through disasters, and the Red Cross relies on the compassion, generosity, and trust of our local community for financial support to get the job done. The HEROES Campaign is a volunteer-led, short- term, community-based event that helps raise these necessary funds for local services.
