HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution_18-01/02_02/14/2002• RESOLUTION NO. 18-01/02 A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, REQUESTING THE ADOPTION OF AN APPORTIONMENT PLAN IN WHICH PALM BEACH COUNTY RESIDENTS COMPRISE A MAJORITY OF THE CONSTITUENCY IN THE SENATORIAL AND REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICTS CREATED; DIRECTING THIS RESOLUTION BE FORWARDED TO THE SENATE REAPPORTIONMENT COMMITTEE AND THE HOUSE PROCEDURAL AND REDISTRICTING COUNCIL; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, the Village of Tequesta is located in the northern end of Palm Beach County; and WHEREAS, the Village of Tequesta has strong interdependence with neighboring municipalities, other governmental agencies, and quasi- governmental agencies located in Palm Beach County; and WHEREAS, the Village of Tequesta and its citizens have common interests with its neighbors sharing in economic partnerships in commerce and trade, educational and transportation systems, health care providers, foundations and hospitals, environmental and natural resource preservation, charitable work, the arts, and public service partnership with the constitutional offices of Palm Beach County who are also dedicated to the well-being of all residents; and WHEREAS, the senatorial and representative districts established in 1992 and based upon United States Decennial census of 1990 do not uniformly provide equal representation for the citizens of Palm Beach County based upon current census data; and WHEREAS, respecting the boundaries of political subdivisions such as Palm Beach County in a traditional districting principle recognized by the United States Supreme Court; and • • two ~ution 18-01/02 WHEREAS, based on the community of interest established in Palm Beach County, the need to provide County residents equal representation, and respect for the County's geographic boundaries, the Village of Tequesta urges the Florida Legislators to adopt an apportionment plan that maximizes the number of senatorial and representative districts where the elected legislators will reside in Palm Beach County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF WEST PALM BEACH THAT: Section 1: The foregoing recitals are true and correct. U Section 2: The Village of Tequesta believes that the proposed Senate Redistricting Maps (Senate Plan: S17S0001; Sponsor: Laurant) are not in the best interests of the voters of Palm Beach County and hereby requests the Florida Legislature to adopt an apportionment plan in which Palm Beach County residents comprise a majority of the constituency in the senatorial and representative districts created to represent the County's residents. Section 3: The Village of Tequesta requests that such reapportionment plan create senatorial and representative districts of nearly equal population arranged in a logical and compact geographic pattern and that promotes fair representation. Section 4: The Village of Tequesta hereby directs that a certified copy of this Resolution be sent to the Senate Reapportionment Committee and the House Procedural and Redistricting Council. Section 5: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption by the Tequesta Village Council. THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION was offered by (~~,~,! I2~iv ~CaCYL ,who moved its adoption.
