Regular Council STAFF MEMO Meeting: Regular Council -Dec 10 2020 Staff Contact: Brad Gomberg, Director of IT Department: IT Approve the Lease -Purchase of Pure Storage X20 Storage Array and Associated Networking Hardware Under Omnia Partners - IT Solutions Contract. SUMMARY: Our current NetApp SAN (storage area network) array hosts all of our, approximately 50, virtualized production servers. It is one of the most vital pieces of equipment on the network and is designed to operate 24/7/365 without interruption. The existing hardware is over 8 years old, is EOL (end -of -life), and no longer supported by the manufacturer. We have continuing support on the storage hardware through a third party, however that support contract does not entitle us to software or updates and carries an annual increase of between 5-8% on what is currently a $20,320.92 annual expense, but one that ran as high as $50,000 per year when supported through the OEM. The storage networking hardware is also EOL and presently unsupported. The SAN has served us well but is at the end of its life cycle. There were four primary goals I had in proposing a new system. • Find a SAN provider with a more sustainable support and maintenance model. • Find a system with enough effective capacity to meet the needs of the Village for at least 7 years. • Find a system that is easy to setup and manage as an IT team of two. • Find a system with the feature depth to provide the flexibility to meet future demands. After reviewing 6 top tier solutions and narrowing that list down to 3 finalists, I found only 1 candidate that was able to meet all 4 criteria. I am happy to recommend the Pure Storage X20 array and Cisco storage networking solution to serve the needs of the Village for the foreseeable future. The X20 array is a state of the art, all flash storage system that will provide the capacity and performance to meet our 7-year minimum operational effectiveness threshold, however the lifecycle of the hardware should be considerably longer than our current system due to Pure's novel "Evergreen" support model. "Pure1", the storage management software, is extremely easy to use and provides valuable reporting, analytics, and infrastructure monitoring tools that will help IT keep everything running at peak efficiency. Pure Storage is innovator and market leader. They continuously improve the array via feature updates which we will benefit from as part of their support offering. The "Evergreen" support model offered by Pure Storage eliminates the traditional, high CAPEX, storage forklift upgrade cycle that we are presently engaged in. Evergreen support is delivered at a flat rate that does not increase, considerably reducing long term OPEX spending. Controller upgrades are included every three years, significantly extending the useful life of the array hardware. This support package will run $15,569.40 per year, which represents an annual savings of $4751.52 over the current 3rd party support. Page 151 of 179 Agenda Item #13. Due to advancements in technology since the budget process, I will be able to deliver this solution for $167,389.09, which is $162,610-91 under budget. The project is proposed on the Omnia Partners — IT Solutions Government Contract, and will be purchased under a municipal leasing program through BB&T over athree-year term.
