Meeting: Workshop - May 02 2022
Staff Contact: James Trube, Fire Chief Department: Fire
Discussion on Temporarily Increasing the Number of Authorized Positions in the Fire Department
SUMMARY: _j
Temporarily increase the number of authorized positions in the Fire Dept. by one for a Firefighter/Medic
position. This is an un-budgeted expense that staff is proposing to assist with maintaining minimal
staffing levels while the department works through sudden medical absences and retirements.
It is anticipated that the Fire Department will experience 2 retirements in the next 1-4 years. The
inclusion of a FF/Medic will help with succession planning for the department as well as cover the
medical absences for an undetermined amount of time. The requested position will be absorbed in
projecting retirements and the authorized positions will revert back to 21 certified positions (including
Captains) without further considerations. The first scheduled retirement will take place no later than
April 30, 2023.
The overall increase to the Village of Tequesta would include $29,712 for FY2021-22 and $52,850 for
FY2022-23 for salary and benefits. In addition to the salary and benefits costs, we will also spend
$7,620 in gear &uniforms (FY22021-22) and $950 for physical exam (FY2022-23). The total cost for
the eleven -month program is $91,132. Staff proposal will ease the burden on current personnel and
reduce the dependence on overtime coverage.
