Re: Support for South County Road Bridge, Martin County
Dear Governor DeSantis:

I am writing on behalf of the Village of Tequesta Council, to express support for funding the South
County Road Bridge Project in Martin County, Florida.
The South County Bridge is a rapidly deteriorating bridge and at the end of its useful life. The Bridge is
no longer structurally sufficient. The state has now imposed load restrictions due to its poor condition.
The design phase to replace the Bridge is currently underway. The project consists of removing and
replacing the existing roadway and a separate pedestrian bridge structure. The new structures will
include a corrosion -inhibiting material to promote structural sufficiency and a longer life cycle.
The South County Bridge is a vital structure for Martin County, the surrounding area, and the Village of
Tequesta. We believe the improvements to the bridge will increase resiliency by providing enhanced
protection to the areas' mangroves and accommodate for rising sea levels. In addition, the new
structure will benefit users by creating a multimodal pathway with room for utilities and create a
corridor for a wide range of access for residential users, businesses, emergency vehicles and law
enforcement.
Please consider this important Project for Martin County and the Village of Tequesta residents.
Sincerely,
Mayor Molly Young

STATE FUNDING REQUEST
U
CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SOUTH COUNTY ROAD BRIDGE
REQUEST: $3,000,000 for Fiscal Year 2023/2024
Project Cost: $6,000,000
The funding will be used toward replacing the South County Road Bridge, a rapidly
deteriorating bridge that has had multiple repairs, but is no longer structurally
sufficient. Due to its poor condition, the state has now imposed load restrictions.
With the need to replace the bridge, the design phase for the project is
currently underway. The project consists of removing the existing roadway
and separate pedestrian bridge, and combining both in a new structure that uses
corrosion -inhibiting material to promote structural sufficiency and a longer life cycle.
Safety
In addition to replacing a deficient structure, the new design will include a change in roadway geometry and alignment
for safer navigation through the corridor for motor, pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Mobility & Economic Competitiveness
The construction phase of this project will create a positive economic impact for the community by creating jobs in the
area. Post -construction, the new structure will feature multimodal pathways with room for utilities and create a corridor
for a wide range of access — from residential and businesses, to emergency vehicles and low enforcement.
Resiliency
The project will include additional water quality improvements. The new alignment
and rise in elevation of the proposed bridge will increase resiliency by providing
enhanced protection to the area's mangroves and accommodate for rising sea levels.
Quality of Life
The proposed bridge will better connect neighborhoods and continue to serve the
commuting citizens, motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and marine traffic, encouraging -
community and connection. .4
Innovation
The existing bridge material will be repur osed to support Martin County's Artificial
Reef Program which creates habitat for ish and underwater organisms. This will be
similar to the recently completed Murphy Road Bridge pro . ect in Palm City, which
added over 1,500 tons of repurposed concrete to the arRicial reef locations, which is
equivalent to just over nine times as heavy as the Statue of Liberty without the base.
Repurposed material from Murphy Road
Bridge now on the ocean floor with
thriving aquatic life.
