SUBJECT: Palm Beach County Co-Tran Public Transportation System;
Agenda Item VII-A
At the request of Mayor Capretta, this item is brought to your
attention for discussion and direction.
The Mayor will be attending a meeting of Northern Palm Beach
County Mayors on July 23rd to discuss expansion of the County Co-
Tran system. The northern limit of Co-Tran currently is PGA
Boulevard at the North County Courthouse. Service to Northern Palm
Beach County was originally implemented in May of 1980 at a level
Of six day a week service with forty-five minute intervals. In
July of '81, service was curtailed to two days a week. All service
was eliminated in spring of 1988. In both cases of curtailment, a
cost versus benefit analysis was performed, which dictated the
reduction. Municipalities not currently served by Co-Tran include
Tequesta, North Palm Beach, Jupiter and Juno Beach.
Due to the large population increase in the North County area
since 1981, expansion of the service is being discussed by various
parties. The purpose of the July 23 meeting is to discuss this
expansion. If service were to be extended to Northern Palm Beach
County, political and/or practical support to convince Palm Beach
County to fund the expansion would probably be necessary. If the
service were to be provided, it would probably be a six day a week,
hourly -interval service. The potential routes are unknown at this
time and would be determined from petitions of potential riders,
and would probably tie to central and south county routes at the
Palm Beach Gardens Mall.
