The Tequesta Community Appearance Board held a regularly scheduled meeting at the Village Hall, 357 Tequesta Drive, Tequesta, Florida, on Wednesday, May 30, 1990. The meeting was called to order by Vice - Chairman, Paul Coben at 9:30 A.M. Community Appearance Board members present were: Vice -Chairman Paul Coben, James Coble, Ruth Maitland, and Victor W. Strahan. Steve Kennedy, Deputy Building Official, was also in attendance. II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Deputy Building Official stated a discussion was needed regarding the standard signage at the Fashion Mall Shopping Center. The Agenda was approved as amended. III. NEW BUSINESS A) An application from Norah Lind, d/b/a The South Pole, for the installation of two (2) single face illuminated wall signs at 150 U.S. Highway One, North (The Fashion Mall); a 2' x 16' sign on the east elevation, and a 2' x 4' sign on the south elevation. In attendance with Norah Lind was Wendell Baker of Baron Sign Company who stated that the sign for the east elevation had been redesigned from a 2' x 16' to a 2' x 15' sign. Vice -Chairman Coben explained to the Board that a standard sign concept for Fashion Mall had been previously approved. Mr. Coben pointed out there is a variation to that standard comprised of a red line on the Heidelberg sign. It had been previously requested to adjust the sign standard to allow for that red line. Before the Board today is another request to allow for a variation from the standard, to allow for Community Appearance Board Meeting Minutes May 30, 1990 Page 2 -------------------------- blue outline to the lettering. Norah Lind explained this would be the third South Pole to have been opened, and blue is representative of the South Pole profile and image. She presented a sample of their blue wrapping paper, and explained the floors are done in blue and white tile. She stated she was trying to compromise between conforming to the sign standard at Fashion Mall while at the same time trying to maintain some uniformity to the South Pole image. Ms. Lind presented a letter from Ed Nelson, owner of the Fashion Mall, approving white lettering with a blue border. She stated she did not presently have a color rendition of the proposed sign. Steve Kennedy explained the sign standard calls for the color "ivory", not white. Ms. Lind explained Carpet Kingdom there at the Fashion Mall has white lettering on their sign. Mr. Kennedy explained Carpet Kingdom may be in violation. Vice -Chairman Coben stated he would feel much better about making a decision with a color rendition of the sign before him. Mr. Coble felt introducing the blue would add an additional color to the shopping mall signs, and deter from uniformity. Mr. Baker argued that the blue trim to their lettering would increase visibility during the day and night. Ruth Maitland stated that each business could plead their case for having their sign to comply with the businesses wishes, but the point is to maintain uniformity at the shopping center. Boardmember Maitland moved to defer decision until a color version, with the proposed lettering and typestyle, is presented for the Board's review. Boardmember Coble seconded the motion. The vote on the motion was: James Coble - for Ruth Maitland - for Victor Strahan - for Paul Coben - abstained the motion therefore passed and was adopted. After discussion with Norah Lind, Wendell Baker reported that The South Pole sign would comply with the Code and there would be no need to return before the CAB. Steve Kennedy explained a new rendering of the sign would have to be presented to the Building Department to receive a permit. Community Appearance Board Meeting Minutes May 30, 1990 Page 3 -------------------------- V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS There was no unfinished business. VI. ANY OTHER MATTERS Steve Kennedy discussed with the Board the fact that many of the signs at Fashion Mall included red accent. It was suggested that the Standard Sign Approval for Fashion Mall could be amended to include red accent, subject to Ed Nelson's approval, or, the Building Department could contact Mr. Nelson, to suggest he sake an application for a change. Vice -Chairman Coben suggested that if this is done in the form of a letter to Mr. Nelson, the letter should also advise that Carpet Kingdom's sign is not acceptable. Steve Kennedy informed the Board that that would be a Code Enforcement issue. The Board agreed the Building Department should contact Mr. Nelson to resolve the red accent issue in the signage at Fashion Mall. VII. ADJOURNMENT There being no further adjourned at 10:40 A.M.
