WHEREAS, as long ago as 400 H.C., Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, ' ��!` ' repudiated ancient beliefs that Epilepsy was a visitation from the Gods •.iia - < and sacred or that it was a curse from the Gods that people afflicted with - _ ^:,,j this disorder held prophetic power. Hippocrates believed that Epilepsy , --k�t(t(��` was a brain disorder; and yAW a, � �..- WHEREAS, a seizure is a sudden, brief attack of altered consciousness, 1 `, motor activity or sensory phenomena. It is a sign that certain brain T. /1tOM4 '%% •� cells (neurons) are discharging an excessive amount of electrical ,: .- -s impulses, and r,"� �..�'. ae WHEREAS, Epilepsy can be caused by injury to the v:fbrain, lack of oxygen at .�l, birth, brain tumor, infection and brain hemorrhage. In sixty percent of w 2, the cases, the cause is unknown. �'/ tk7"-70 WHEREAS, Epilepsy can affect anyone, at any age and at any time; and • • ` WHEREAS, more than two million Americans are afflicted with some type of ��,,. 424 7• Epilepsy.
