Bradford, Village Manager /1 5 7 DATE: February 13, 1992 SUBJECT: Consideration of Membership in the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County; Agenda Item At the recent economic mini-summit held by the Jupiter/Tequesta/Juno Beach Chamber of Commerce, it was made evident to the participants that one of the discrepancies in the employment base of the north county region is the lack of a diversified number of "value added" businesses. The type of industrial expansion that is supported is limited to clean industry, high-tech industry, corporate or regional headquarters and other industrial uses that mesh with our lifestyle, environment and zoning. It was estimated that a value added business with 100 employees brings 2.3 million dollars in capital investment with it. For each 100 jobs created in a value added industry, another 2 million dollars in payroll are added and another 1 . 5 million dollars in retail sales are added. The multiplier effect of such businesses and industry are self evident. Attached is correspondence received from Philippe Jeck, a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, requesting Tequesta consideration of membership in the Business Development Board. I believe that this is an important consideration and that Tequesta should seek membership, joining with Jupiter to utilize our membership and resources, in participation with the Chamber of Commerce, to help bring these sought after industries to the north county region in order to bolster and sustain our local economy. I believe that Philippe Jeck and/or Larry Pelton, Executive Director of the Business Development Board, will be present to answer any questions that you may have regarding this request. It is recommended that Tequesta equal Jupiter' s support with a $2, 500 annual investment in the Board. Should the Village Council accept this recommendation, we will seek a budgetary amendment at a later date. I hope that you will also consider joining Jupiter and the many other municipal members in investing in the tax base of the future. The Board's mission is to assist in the area's economic growth by recruiting, retaining and expanding global business investments into Palm Beach County.
