Discussion on Coastal Resiliency
Over the past few years, there have been several events of Beach erosion. Recently there has been
documented damage to properties in JIC. This has prompted a discussion on Coastal Resiliency.
Coastal resiliency refers to the ability of coastal communities and ecosystems to withstand and
recover from natural disasters, environmental changes, and other disturbances. This concept has
gained significant attention in recent years due to the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme
weather events, sea-level rise, and other impacts of climate change.
Key aspects of coastal resiliency include:
• Infrastructure: Building or enhancing infrastructure to withstand storms, floods, and erosion.
This can include seawalls, levees, Storm Water management systems, and natural
infrastructure like wetlands and dunes.
• Community Planning: Implementing land-use planning and Building Code regulations that
minimize development in vulnerable areas and promote resilient building practices. This
involves engaging with local communities to develop strategies that consider their needs and
priorities.
• Natural Defenses: Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems such as mangroves, coral
reefs, and salt marshes, which act as buffers against storm surges, provide habitat for wildlife,
and absorb carbon dioxide.
• Early Warning Systems: Developing and improving systems to monitor and forecast coastal
hazards such as hurricanes, tsunamis, and storm surges, and to provide timely warnings to
residents and emergency responders.
• Community Engagement and Education: Educating residents about the risks of living in
coastal areas and involving them in decision-making processes related to coastal resiliency.
This can help build support for mitigation and adaptation efforts and foster a sense of
ownership and stewardship.
Overall, coastal resiliency requires a multi-faceted approach that integrates engineering, policy,
economics, ecology, and social considerations to create sustainable and resilient coastal
communities.
The list below are items the Village has or can take to promote a resilient coastline:
• Beach Road Design Guidelines, Turtle Protection Ordinance, additional landscaping
requirements.
• Currently the Village is undertaking a Vulnerability Study to deal with Sea-Level Rise
• The Village has consulted with the Department of Environmental Resources Management of
Palm Beach County for Beach Re-nourishment
• The Village is currently discussing a Living Shoreline Ordinance
• Updated Building Code - Milestone Inspections (Condos near Coast)
• Seeking a Focus Group (Experts to review past events along the beach)

Agenda Item #2.
• Consider grant funding and study to analyze the coastal issues and recommend mitigation
strategies.
• Partner with other municipalities and engage Lobbyist to seek more Home Rule consideration
along the coastal communities
• Membership to Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association (fsbpa.com)
https:Hfsbpa.com/index.html
• Seek information and presentation from the Office of Resilience and Protection.
