Subject: Appointment of Stephen J. Allison as Chief of Police
Section 3 .02(7) of the Village Charter states that one of the
powers and duties of the Village Manager shall be:
"To appoint all Department Heads of the Village, subject to
the approval of the Village Council, basing such
recommendations upon merit and fitness alone. "
Steve Allison, currently the Assistant Chief of Police and Acting
Chief of Police, is the highest ranking administrative officer of
the Department and the logical choice for this appointment. It
is my desire to appoint Mr. Allison as Chief of Police basing
this recommendation ,upon merit and fitness for duty. Mr. Allison
has a long 'and distinguished career with the Tequesta Police
Department and is capable of leading the Department into the next
century.
Mr. Allison is a native of Sanford, Florida and has lived in Hobe
Sound since 1964 . He has been married 26 years and has two grown
children. Mr. Allison received his Bachelor of Applied Arts in
Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University. He served in
the United States Army for three years after which he became a
police officer for the Town of Jupiter Island. On January 1,
1977, Mr. Allison . joined the Tequesta • Police Department.
Accordingly, he has worked for the Tequesta Police Department for
19 .5 years . In 1979, Mr. Allison was promoted to Road Patrol
Sergeant. , In 1988, he was promoted to the position of
Lieutenant, and in 1995, became the Assistant Chief of Police.
- It is my recommendation that the Village Council confirm or
approve my appointment of Stephen J. Allison as Chief of Police
of the Tequesta Police Department.
