Florida Power and Light Company Storm Secure Underground Program for the Village of Tequesta
Addressing Power Quality and Reliability Issues
FPL has identified areas within the Village of Tequesta with power quality issues and frequent
outages. FPL is recommending the undergrounding of 4.73 miles of overhead power lines, which will
benefit 622 household residents in the Village.
This recommendation presents a unique opportunity to enhance the Village's power infrastructure,
improve service reliability, and increase safety and aesthetic appeal.
By undergrounding the overhead power lines, these issues can be significantly mitigated:
• Improved Reliability: Underground power lines are less susceptible to disruptions caused by
weather events, falling trees, and other external factors that commonly affect overhead lines.
• Enhanced Power Quality: Underground systems can provide more consistent voltage levels
and reduce the occurrence of power surges and interruptions, leading to better overall power
quality for residents and businesses.
2. Financial Advantage: Construction Costs Covered by FPL
One of the major barriers to undergrounding power lines is the high initial cost. However, in this case:
• FPL is Covering Construction Costs: FPL's commitment to paying for all construction costs
eliminates the financial burden on the Village, making this an exceptional opportunity to
enhance the community's infrastructure without impacting the budget.
3. Increased Safety
Undergrounding power lines can significantly improve safety in the Village:
• Reduced Risk of Electrical Hazards: Underground power lines eliminate the danger posed
by downed overhead lines, which can cause electrocution or fires.
• Improved Public Safety: With the removal of utility poles and overhead wires, there is a
reduced risk of vehicular accidents involving these structures.
4. Aesthetic and Environmental Enhancements
Transitioning to underground power lines offers considerable aesthetic and environmental benefits:
• Visual Appeal: Removing overhead lines and utility poles will enhance the visual appeal of the
Village, making it more attractive for residents, visitors, and potential property buyers. Note:
Poles with communication lines on them may not be removed.
• Property Values: Enhanced aesthetics can contribute to maintaining or even increasing
property values in the area.
• Environmental Protection: The reduction in the number of utility poles and overhead wires
can help protect local wildlife and vegetation.
5. Long-Term Cost Savings
Agenda Item #1.
Despite the high initial investment, underground power lines can result in long-term savings:
• Lower Maintenance Costs: Underground lines are less exposed to the elements and thus
require less frequent maintenance and repair.
• Reduced Restoration Costs: In the event of a storm or other disaster, underground lines
typically require less extensive repairs, leading to faster and less costly restoration efforts.
6. Technological Advancements and Future-Proofing
Undergrounding power lines can position the Village for future technological advancements:
• Smart Grid Compatibility: Underground systems are well-suited for integration with smart
grid technologies, enabling better energy management and efficiency.
• Support for Renewable Energy: The infrastructure can be optimized to facilitate the
integration of renewable energy sources, contributing to sustainability goals.
7. Community and Stakeholder Benefits
The community stands to gain significantly from this initiative:
• Enhanced Quality of Life: Improved reliability and aesthetics directly contribute to the quality
of life for residents.
• Increased Community Support: Residents are likely to support initiatives that improve their
environment and reduce the inconvenience of power outages and quality issues.
Conclusion
FPL's decision to underground the overhead power lines in the Village, especially with the company
covering all construction costs, presents a unique opportunity. The benefits in terms of reliability,
safety, aesthetics, long-term cost savings, and technological readiness make it a great solution. This
initiative will not only address current power quality and outage issues but also future-proof the
Village's infrastructure, enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents.
