Memorandum
To: Village Council
From: Joann Manganiello, Acting Village Manager
Date: August 4, 2000
Subject: Resolution No. 72-99/00 - Opposing Installation ofTransmission Lines by
Florida Power& Light Company on U.S. Highway One Between the Town of
Juno Beach and the Town of Jupiter;Agenda Item
The Jupiter Town Council is asking neighboring municipalities to band together to oppose the
installation of above-ground transmission lines by Florida Power & Light Company along U.S.
Highway One between the Town of Juno Beach and the Town of Jupiter, and possibly other
areas, which may, eventually, include the Village of Tequesta.
Installation of these extraordinarily large transmission poles and lines is contrary to the Treasure
Coast Regional Planning Council Study, titled "Seven Cities: Northern Palm Beach County U.S. 1
Corridor Study." This Study, which included the Village of Tequesta, addressed the issue of
utility poles and wires and supported the position that overhead power lines should be located
underground along U.S. Highway One to ensure both the aesthetics and economic vitality of this
major corridor. Additionally, placement of utility lines underground would decrease traffic
hazards and lessen the impact to service as a result of storms and hurricanes.
Along with neighboring municipalities, other organizations, such as, the Palm Beach County
League of Cities, area Chambers of Commerce, and Boards of Realtors are being asked to
support this Resolution which supports the installation of said transmission lines on U.S. Highway
One underground.
