Updates of the East Coast Greenway and SUN Trail
Kim Delaney, the Director of Strategic Development & Policy for the Treasure Coast Regional
Planning Council and Allison Burson, the National Greenway Director for the East Coast Greenway
(ECG), will be providing an update on the ECG and SUN Trail network.
The East Coast Greenway is a 3,000-mile route connecting communities from Maine to Florida
through a network of shared-use trails and low-traffic roadways that support nonmotorized travel.
Within the Village of Tequesta, U.S. 1 has been identified as eligible for formal designation as part of
this network, specifically from Beach Road to County Line Road. This designation does not require
any physical improvements to US-1 within the Village.
The Town of Jupiter recently received ECG designation for a 2.5-mile segment of U.S. 1 and the
Jupiter Riverwalk, establishing a regional precedent. Designation of Tequesta's segment would
further strengthen continuity of the Greenway through northern Palm Beach County.
Designation of US-1 as part of the East Coast Greenway is primarily a planning and policy
designation rather than a funding commitment. However, it provides several strategic benefits,
including:
• Reinforcing the Village's support for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
• Enhancing regional and national connectivity within a recognized trail network
• Increasing visibility as an eco-tourism and active transportation destination
• Strengthening competitiveness for state and federal grant opportunities
In particular, designation may support future funding applications for priority projects identified in the
Village's Mobility Plan, including the proposed River to Ocean Trail. The segment from U.S.
1/Tequesta Drive to Beach Road represents a key connection that would align with the Greenway
and may benefit from its designation in future grant evaluations.
Additionally, the segment of U.S. 1 between Tequesta and Jonathan Dickinson State Park is currently
classified as a "high-stress" roadway for bicyclists, and Greenway users are advised to exercise
caution. While this segment lies outside Village jurisdiction, designation of Tequesta's portion of U.S.
1-combined with Jupiter's recent designation may help highlight the need for coordinated
improvements by the Florida Department of Transportation and Martin County. Improving connectivity
to Jonathan Dickinson State Park would provide a regional benefit and enhance access for Village
residents.

Agenda Item #2.
An update will also be provided on the SUN Trail (Shared-Use Nonmotorized Trail) network, a
statewide program administered by the Florida Department of Transportation that funds the
development and connectivity of multi-use trails for recreation and alternative transportation.
Coordination between the ECG and SUN Trail systems may present additional opportunities for future
project funding and implementation.
Recommendation/Next Steps
If the Village Council supports designation of U.S. 1 as part of the East Coast Greenway, staff will
return at a future meeting with a Resolution to formalize the designation and coordinate with the East
Coast Greenway Alliance on next steps.
