National Police Week and National Peace Officers Memorial Day
WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and
the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.As the established resolution with Congress in
19621 National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives
in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and
WHEREAS,since the first recorded death in 1786, 24,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have
made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, 111 Officers have lost their lives in the line of duty in 2025 and 148 Officers in the previous year.
WHEREAS,there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United
States, including the dedicated members of Village of Tequesta Police Department; and
WHEREAS,while safeguarding the life and property of our citizens Chief Gus Medina and the men and women of
the department unceasingly provide a vital public service; and
WHEREAS, National Police Week will be observed this year May 10-16 and
WHEREAS, May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families
and U.S.flags should be flown at half-staff.
NOW,THEREFORE,the Village of Tequesta Mayor, Molly Young, hereby proclaims the week commencing May
10th, 2026 be recognized in the Village of Tequesta as National Police Week and publicly salute the service of
law enforcement officers in Palm Beach County and the communities across the nation.We further direct that
pursuant to the United States of America Public Law 103-322 that all flags be flown at half-staff on Friday, May
15, 2026, Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families.
In Witness Whereof,we have set our hand and caused to be affixed the seal of the Village of Tequesta this 14th
day of May, 2026.
