But the contractors who beat out nearly 10 firms with a $2.4 million bid are not fazed by the project that is slated to be completed by fall 2010. "We build bridges, schools, jails, just about everything," said Rick Sheltra, vice president of the com- pany. "We bid on all of them, and when we looked at the village of Tequesta's project, we figured it was a crap shoot to get the right numbers. We didn't know what the other bids were; if we had, we'd bid one dollar less than they did." The village had received federal stimulus funds of $3 million, and because of the federal involve- ment, the Florida Department of Transportation is shepherding the project. Demolition is scheduled to begin by the end of December. Despite the economy, his com- pany has managed to keep all of its 160 employees busy. "We'll be working between 50 and 60 people on the bridge job," Sheltra said during the pre-construction meet- ing. "We're glad to have won the bid to build the bridge." Ronnie Larowe, Sheltra & Son's project manager, said that for the most part the bridge is a straight- forward project, beginning with the preparation and the pilings that will support the bridge. But there is one twist. "The design shows that the village wants decorative pan- els on the sides, and this will be the toughest part of the job," Larowe said. "We don't usually put these types of panels on a bridge." The panels will have a depiction of a member of the Tequesta tribe that is the symbol of the village. Sheltra & Son will be videotap- ing the properties within 400 feet of the bridge to record their condi- tion before and after the bridge is constructed. Mo Mabrouk, with the FDOT, will be the middleman between the construction company and the village, including its residents, and he told the residents that if there was any damage to adjacent properties, that Sheltra & Son would be responsible for repairs. At the pre-construction meeting, Mabrouk gave his phone number to the crowd that filled the village council chambers and told them he was available 24/7 if there were problems or questions. The new bridge will be about five feet higher than the present bridge and links the east side of the vil- lage tothe west side. Tequesta has police patrolling the west side of the community and the Tequesta Fire Department has rented a space on the west side for vehicles and personnel who will respond to emergencies during the 230 days of construction. KIT BRADSHAW • kit bradshaw%~scripps.com Ron Rudolph, a surveyer for Sheltra Construction, works with his team to mark the seagrass areas near the Tequesta Bridge. Demolition of the old span is expected soon and completion could come as soon as September. •uoi}ona}suoo 3o sAup oEZ au; 2utanp saioua2aawa o; puodsaa Him oqm lauuosa@d puu salolgan ao3 apls ;sam aq} uo @Duds u pa;uaa suq ;uatu;auda(I acid u;sanbaj, aq} puu A}iununuoo aq; 3o apis ;sam atp Ouilloa;ed awilod suq u;sanbay •apls;sam aq} o} a2ul -Hn @ql ,io apis ;sua aq; 63JU I puu o2ptaq;uasoad aq; uuq; aag2iq;993 anij }noqu aq MtA aOplaq mau aU •suoi}sanb ao sutalgoad aaam aaaq; 3t G/bZ olquHunu sum aq uzaq; pio; puu saaqumi4o Hounoa 02uH[n aq; paHg;uq; pmoaD aq; o; aaqumu auogd siq anu2 3 noaquW tui}aaut uoi;Dna;suoD-aad aq;;V •saludw To3 algtsuodsaa aq pinom uoS 2g ua}lagS ;uq; `sailaadoad ;uaDufpu o; aouwup Auu sum aaaq; 31 ;eq} s;uapisaa aq; plo; aq puu `s;uapisaa s;i 2uipnloui `aBejlin aq; puu AuudtuoD not;Dna}suoD au} uaam;aq ueutalpplut au} aq Him `,LOC[A aq} q}im `Knoaq-eW oW •pa}Dna}suoD si a2piaq @tp aa}lu puu aaopaq uoll -tpuoa mail; paooaa o; aOplaq atp 3o ;aap oot ulg}im satl.tadoad atp BUT -du}oapin aq Him uoS 2g ua}iagS aeHln a44 30logULSs atp sl;uq; agla; u}sonbas, aq} 3o aaqut@Ut u jo uoi;oldap u anuq Him slaued ag,L ,,,92plaq u uo slauud jo sadA; asaq; Ind AHunsn },uop aM„ -plus amoavq „`qof aq} 3o }aud }sag2no} aqp aq Him siq} puu `sapis agp uo sle -uud ani}ua000p s;uem 02uilin aq} }eq} smogs uOlsop aqy„ •}situ} Duo si aaaq} ;ng aBplaq aq} ;aoddns Him }uq; sButHd aq} puu uoi;uaudead ag; q}lm Buluui2aq `;oafoad paumao3 -pg2lua4s u si a2piaq agl:.md;sout aq; ao3;eg} Pius 1192uuew }oafoad s,uoS 2g ua;lagS `amoau7 aiuuoH „•92ptaq ag} plinq op plq atjp uom anuq o; pul2 aa,aA/„ •Oul -;aatu uotpna;suoD-aad aq; Bt:qanp plus uaniagS „`qof o2plaq aq} uo aldoad 09 puu 0g uaam;aq 2ui3taom aq H,aA&„ Nnq saaAolduta 091 s;l 3o He dawl o; pa27aueut suq Auud -utoD siq'Auiouooa ag; a}ldsa(I aaquiwo(I 3o pue aq; Aq uiOaq o; palnpagos si uoi;iloutaa }oafoad aqp 2uipaagdags si uoqupaodsueay jo ;uatu;aeda(l upiaold atl; `;uatu -anlonul luaapa3 aq; 3o asnuoaq puu `uoiMiu E$ 3o spun3 snlnutl;s 18a3pa3 pantaoaa pug 02VMA agy "Tip Aotp uug; ssal mljop auo plq p,am `puq am 3i :aaam splq aagpo au} ;uqm mou3l ;,uplp aM saaquinu ;gBia aq} ;aB o; poogs duaD u sum }i pean2g am `}oafoad s,u}sanbaL 3o 02uH[n au} ;u P031001 am uagm puu `utagp ,}o qe uo piq aA&„ Rued -uioD aq} 3o }uapisaad @Din `ua}iagS 431H Pius „`2UTgWE)AE) pnoqu;snf `sliuf `sloogos `sa2plaq plinq ate„ '010Z Hui Aq pa;alduiw aq o; pa;uls si ;utp }oafoad aq} Aq pazuj ;ou aaq plq uolHlut •Z$ u g;tm sutaTJ 01 Almau ;no;uaq oqm sao;oua;uoo ag};ng •aOplag aail&q nnau u 3o -9ui -plinq ag} puu aantH aagDpugexoZ aq; ,;o 31a03 WON agl aano a;Ipiag u}sanbaZ aq; 3o uoi;ona;sap agp :peagu qof 2iq u suq UmopuuipUI JO uot;Dnx;suoo uoS 2g m4fagS uzoo•sddia3s4 iAugspeaq•}ix MVHSaV11811)l A8 ap14S u1 Pa raid appq u1sanba jL sam uogan.4suoa uoS a8 -e4taus •uagweldeS se uoos se awoo pinoo uolleldwoo pue uoos peloadxa sl ueds plo eq Io uollllowea •apliq elsenbq ayp ,teou sea,te ssuiftles ayp I,aew of weal sly y}inn s4iom `uollowlsuoa uillays JOI JOAgAins a `ydlopna uoa woo•sddtaos)nAlagsp>;aq 3TK .
