RESOLUTION NO. 8 -87/88

A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE
VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE BUSING
OF TEQUESTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PUPILS A
DISTANCE OF OVER SEVEN MILES TO A SCHOOL
ON CHURCH STREET IN WEST JUPITER, WHERE
RAMPANT DRUG CRIME THREATENS THE SAFETY OF
STUDENTS, AND, URGING INSTEAD THAT TEQUESTA
STUDENTS BE ASSIGNED TO JUPITER ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL FIVE MILES CLOSER, WITH NEARBY PROTECTION
OF THE JUPITER POLICE.
WHEREAS, the Palm Beach County School Administration is
considering re- assignment of Tequesta students to a new
elementary school on Church Street in West Jupiter; and
WHEREAS, Church Street and the Limestone Creek area in the
near vicinity have been the scene of repeated felonies and
crimes associated with crack cocaine; and
WHEREAS, dangers to school pupils such as drug trafficking
and affiliated crimes, are a major concern to parents and school
officials; and
WHEREAS, the County's unincorporated area of Church Street
is under the jurisdiction of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office, not local police; and
WHEREAS, the files of the County Sheriff's Office record
many repeated and ongoing drug crimes and felonies in the Church
Street area; and
WHEREAS, such major continuing crime would be a threat to
the safety of Tequesta students in the peaceful pursuit of their
studies and participation in school events; and
WHEREAS, the route of school buses transporting Tequesta
students to the new school in a crime ridden area would be a
distance of over seven miles; and
WHEREAS, the average busing distance to Jupiter Elementary
School for Tequesta's 254 elementary students would be only 2.47
miles, nearly five miles closer than the Church Street school in
West Jupiter; and
WHEREAS, The Jupiter Elementary School is only one block
1from the Jupiter Police Station, with no uncontrolled crime
endangering the safety of students,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF
THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Tequesta Village Council hereby authorizes
he Village Manager and Chief of Police to notify the Palm Beach
ounty School Board and the County School Superintendent that
Tequesta strenuously objects to busing our elementary school
students a distance of over seven miles to a school on Church
Street in West Jupiter, where drug crimes and other felonies
continue to be a critical law enforcement problem.

Section 2. The Tequesta Village Council urges that the
Palm Beach County School Board assign Tequesta elementary
students to Jupiter Elementary School, at a safe location nearly
five miles closer, with the protection of Jupiter Police at all
hours, including evening and extra - curricular school events.
THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION was offered by Mayor Carlton D.
Stoddard. Councilmember Ron T. Mackail moved its adoption. The
motion was seconded by Councilmember Earl L. Collings, and upon
being put to a vote, the vote was as follows:

The Mayor thereupon declared the Resolution duly passed and
adopted this 23rd day of February, 1988.
