HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution_08-82/83_05/24/1983 Resolution No. 8 -82/83 • A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA REQUESTING THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO ADOPT A FAIR FORMULA REBATING TO LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES 1.2 CENTS PER CALLON OF THE 4 CENTS PER GALLON LOCAL OPTION GAS TAX. WHEREAS, the residents of Palm Beach County municipalities have been supporting local road systems as well as other costs of services through the ail valorem tax; and WHEREAS, Palm Beach County has withdrawn support for local municipalities by no longer rebating a fair share of the road and bridge tax; and WHEREAS, restrictions by Florida state government have forced reduction of the ad valorem tax millage to the point where local services are endangered, including upkeep of roads; and ! MEREAS, the State Legislature has provided a source of funding to be borne by the users of the road system including visitors and tourists who will contribute an estimated 30% of the revenue to be realized through the levy of the 4 cents per gallon-local option gas tax as authorized by state law; and WHEREAS, local residents of the county should be relieved of bearing the entire burden of road costs which have been tremendously increased by tourists; and WHEREAS, the people in local communities of Palm Beach County are in dire need of assistance in funding repair and maintenance of roads; and WHEREAS, the maximum tax amount allowable will only provide partial relief of the much needed repairs and maintenance, and will barely meet the needs that were available 5 years ago, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the Village of Tequesta urges the Board of County Commissioners, Palm Beach County, to take full advantage of this opportunity to relieve the people in local municipalities of the burden of the entire costs for the repair and maintenance of local road systems, by adopting a formula for distributing an equitable portion of the local option 4 cents per gallon gas tax back to local municipalities. Section 2. That of the 4 cents per gallon tax, at least 1.2 cents per gallon (30 %) be returned to local municipalities on a fair and equitable basis commensurate with the gas tax paid by our local residents. -2- Section 3. That the tax rebated to local municipalities be allocated for overall local road systems, not ,just for new road construction only. Section 4. That this resolution shall take effect immediately upon its passage. THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION was offered by Councilmember Thomas J. Beddow who moved its adoption. The Resolution was seconiP6 by Councilmember William Wagar and upon being put to a vote, the vote was as follows: FOR ADOPTION AGAINST AD Thoma J. Beddow Lee M . Brown Thomas J. Little Carlton D.
