HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution_06-77/78_04/18/1978 RESOLUTION NO. 6 A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA REQUESTING THE STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TO ACQUIRE PEANUT ISLAND, AN ENVIRONMENTALLY ENDANGERED LAND, AS A STATE PARK WHEREAS, Peanut Island, located in the Intracoastal Waterway at the mouth of the Palm Beach Inlet, is the only island of its kind on the east coast of Florida; and WHEREAS, a majority of the Island is owned by the Port of Palm Beach; and WHEREAS, in the past the Board of Commissioners of the Port of Palm Beach District have leased the Island to private enterprises for business development; and WHEREAS, the lease to private enterprise was terminated prior to the undertaking of any development which would have destroyed the character of Peanut Island; and WHEREAS, the development of Peanut Island would cause deterioration of the environmental integrity of Lake Worth and the Intracoastal Waterway; and WHEREAS, due.to the unique character of the Island, it should be classified as an environmentally endangered land and protected from any possible future indiscriminate development, and WHEREAS, the people of the State of Florida have ratified the Land Conservation Act of 1972; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA: Section 1 . That the foregoing recitals are hereby ratified. Section 2. That the Department of Natural Resources is hereby requested to declare Peanut Island as environmentally endangered land and to take immediate action to procure Peanut Island as a State Park in the interest of the people of Florida. • • Section 3 . That copies of this Resolution shall be sent to the Department of Natural Resources and the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation and the Martin County Legislative Delegation. THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION was offered by Councilmember Ja me s.Ryan , who moved its adoption. The Resolution was seconded by Councilmember Leslie Cook and upon being put to a vote, the vote was as follows: FOR ADOPTION AGAINST ADOPTION Howard Brown Leslie Cook Harvey Mapes James Ryan Joseph Yoder The Mayor thereupon declared the Resolution duly passed and adopted this 1$ day of April , A.D., 1978.
