HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution_02-74/75_12/10/1974 • RESOLUTION NO. 2 -74/75 A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA EXPRESSING ITS OBJECTIONS TO THE GOVERNORS CMISSION ON CRIMINAL STANDARDS AND GOALS RECOMMENDATION TO ABOLISH MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS OF LESS THAN TEN (10) POLICEMEN. WHEREAS, the Governors Commission on Criminal Standards and Goals has recommended. that for the State of Florida that Municipal Police Departments of less than ten (10) policemen be abolished and consolidated; and WHEREAS, many Municipal Police Departments in the State of Florida with less than ten (10) policemen are providing adequate • and outstanding levels of law enforcement for its residents and businesses; and WHEREAS, many smaller police departments provide the residents and businesses of their municipalities with services over and above normal police services; and WHEREAS, many smaller municipalities with police departments of less than ten (10) policemen would experience financial hardship if it would desire to increase its police department to ten (10) police officers; and WHEREAS, the minimum number of municipal police officers necessary to allow the municipalities to retain their own police departments could, be gradually increased to continue to force the abolishment and consolidation of municipal police departments, • NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA, FLORIDA THAT: Section 1. That the Village of Tequesta hereby voices its opposition to the proposal of the Governors Commission on Criminal Standards and Goals to abolish Municipal Police Departments of less than ten (10) police officers. Section 2. That the Village of Tequesta urges every elected municipal official of Palm Beach County and the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County • to request our State Legislators to defeat this proposal. -2- Section 3 . That the Village of Tequesta continues to believe that expenditures of municipal tax dollars are best spent in the area of local police protection funded by tax dollars of local residents. Section 4. That copies of this Resolution be sent to the Honorable Reubin OID. Askew, Governor of the State of Florida; Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County; the Palm Beach County Municipal League and each member of the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation.
