OF THE VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA
A special meeting of the Councilmen of the Village of T equesta was held Wednes-
day, May 22, 1963 at 8:00 A. M. Councilmen present were: Messrs: Valier, Bowden,
Turnbull, Cornelius and Stewart. Also present were Robert Harp and Attorney William
Lord.
Mayor Valier advised that the meeting was called to further discuss a change
in the Village Charter tp provide for Councilmen to run for election in burroughs
to be elected by all voters and the Mayor to run for election at large and be
elected by all voters. the mayor said senator Ralph Blank had called Mr. Lord
and said he thought the matter could be taken up at this session of the Legislature
with a referendum provision. This charter change had been discussed at the meeting
of Zpril 1. Mr. Lord advised the councilmen that it was questionable whether or
not it would be passed on and that the members of the Palm Beach County delegation
had hot made any definite committment.
A draft of the proposed charter change was read providing for two burroughs,
one west of the north fork of the Loxahatchee River and ona east of the river.
Two councilmen would be ele - eted from each burrough by all voters and the mayor
would run for election at large and be elected by all voters. Candidates would
have to reside in the burrough in which the were running for election.
Much discussion was held concerning the boundaries of the Burroughs, with
thought given to an east west boundaries and also to using Riverside Boulevard
as a boundary. Mr. Stewart questioned if now was the time for such a change to be
made. Following the discussion Cornelius moved, seconded by Turnbull that the
draft of the charter change as read, with a referendum provision be adopted, to
provide for a burrough west of the north fork of the Loxahatchee River and a
burrough east ofthe river with two (2) councilmen to be elected from each burrough
by all voters and a mayor to run for election at large and be elected by all
voters, and that the proposed change be forwarded to Senator Ralph Blank for
presentation to the current session of the State Legislature. The vote on the
motion was as follows:
Cornelius - For
Bowden - For
Turnbull - For
Valier - For
Stewart - Against
Motion was passed and adopted.
There being no further business , the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 A.M.
