River Cities Printing - All T A Doattack case to go before He said he spoke with the owners of the dog and grand _')urX several of the neighbors and said the dog had bitten more than one person before, but he saw no signs that the dog had been raised for dog fighting or been involved in dog fighting. Owner ponald Brewer did tell Crosby that the dog was raised to protect his home, http: //www. herald-dispatch. com/2005/May/24/LNIi st2. hhn 7/29/2005 Child killed by pit bull's attack buried Page 2 of 3 Crosby said. Brewer toid him that he purchased the dog while he was in the Army - in Texas, and trained him to protect his wife while he was out on orders. As af Monday afemoon, Crosby had not yet talked to a medical examiner ar to ` Brittany Fleeman. From what he's learned from others involved, Arianna, Brittany Fleeman, a 5-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl were at the house, while the owners were out. Crosby said he was told the dog first put his paws on the shoulders of the 5-year- old, but obediently retreated when he was told. Crosby said he suspects that when the dog approached 2-year-old Arianna, she shrieked and perhaps ran or flailed, which fikeVy put the dog irrto an aggressive mode. "Children are smallr, they smeH funny, move quickly and have high voices — that mimics prey," he said. "It triggers the prey drive, and if iYs a dog that has a strong prey drive, it wants to capture what it's chasing." Firefighters who contained the dog described it as extreme4y angry. ne even used the word "evil." Crosby said what they saw was a"large dog in full-blown aggressive mode." It's not a good idea ta ban an entire breed and punish responsible dog owners and good dogs, he said. He said he plans to make finro recommendatians to the Cabell-Huntington Health Department and the Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Cantrol Shelter. One is that when a quarantine is placed on an animal for biting someone, that the quarantine be enforced by keeping the animal detained at animal control. If there's no room, maybe keep it at a veterinarian's office, but do not let it stay with the owners, Crosby suggested. There afso should be orciinances for tighter control of these animals, he said. Why someone would warrt to have a dog that requires the owner to keep °Beware of the Dog" signs in the window, Crosby doesn't know, he said. "Maybe thaYs a sign that something is wrong with the dog," he said. "Qogs should be companions, friendly and pleasant to be around. If you're worried about your house, get an alarm." Crosby said about 20 fatal dog attacks occur nationwide per year, and Arianna's death marks the 14th fatal attack this year. • Get more information on this xopic by searching our Archives • Discuss this topic with otherS'in our Community Forum .t '. irfrtc€ uect »r Subscribe to The Herald-Dispatch 7 days a week! Prosecutors said McCuen's three pit bulls escaped her property and attacked Jennifer Brooke, 40, last November. Brooke was feeding her horses on the morning of Nov. 20 when she was so brutally mauled that not even the baseball bat she had with her could have saved her from the dogs, authorities said. Two other people -- Brooke's husband and her neighbor -- were also injured before the dogs were shot and killed. Neighbors said that McCuen's dogs were aggressive and always managed to get out around the neighborhood. The dogs had attacked a jogger seven months before Brooke's death, prosecutors said. Many deputies said that Brooke's mauled body was one of the most gruesome things they had ever seen. Eight firemen had to be counseled after F ` q- they responded to the scene.
