By MICHELLE KAPLAN Special to The Palm Beach Post TEQUESTA — Hidden among the village's residential neighborhoods is a little oasis, Constitution Park, with tranquil shady pathways, storybook pavilion and playgrounds at which even a 10-year old wouldn't turn up his nose. All is serene, except on the first Sunday of the month, when it becomes a bustling open-air market, ripe with fresh produce, chatty neighbors, tourists and about 40 vendors ready to sell goods with an eco-friendly twist. The market will be staged for the last time this spring from noon to 4 p.m.. Sunday. It'll take a break for the summer before returning in the fall. Born on Facebook, the market is in some ways a product of social media. "We put a blurb on the Village of Tequesta's Facebook page and asked for feedback," said Wendy Schmidt, the village's recreation specialist. "Within four hours, we had 20 comments on how much the people loved the idea of a green market," said Greg Corbitt, its parks and recreation director. And this isn't your mother's farmer's market, Corbitt said. It promotes organic products, sustainability, local farms and a healthy lifestyle, as well as being an afternoon destination a whole family can enjoy. The market has been a work in progress this winter season. Taking ideas and feedback from patrons and vendors, it's been successful, said Corbitt. "Each market, we're learning more and more about how to run it," he said. Meet chef and business owner R. Francesca, of Francesca's Terra Verde Farm Club in Jupiter. She said she not only finds new customers at the market, but she also get the opportunity to fulfill what she describes as her calling — teaching people about sustainability, ethically raised meats and the difference letting animals graze naturally can make. "We believe in having a community of farmers feed the community directly," Francesca said. A few feet away is Dalmita Bennett, a pre-teen who "can sell you a car without an engine," says her godmother Falinda Holland-Rios. Bennett works the crowd, hawking fresh, locally grown produce that Holland-Rios distributes from mostly organic farms in Plant City, Belle Glade and Clewiston. Take a quick spin around the market and enjoy a little sensory overload with an array of goods all vying for attention — Magic Solar Beads, orchids, herbs, fresh eggs, healthy dog treats at Bark'n Bones, even bird houses from the Crazy Bird Lady. Tucked in a cozy, shady spot are three local women — Kit Stewart-Legato and Lee Resnik of Tequesta and Kathy Phelan of Jupiter — selling homemade cookies. Their booth is an eye-catcher decked out patriotically in red, white and blue. The money from the sale, about $200-$300 per market day, goes toward packing boxes full of supplies for soldiers overseas, at a cost of $13.45 per box. 1 of 4 3/29/2012 8:56 AM nttp:iia igitai.o uvesortware.corrvv u veivlir.irai mti eactuo svrrmtc:o... The message and reflexology booth stands ready to help shoppers about to drop. They can recharge for round two — desserts. It may be time for a spot of tea at Not ]ust Tea & Cake, with a variety of teas, aromatic and bold, spicy and mild. Or maybe a caffeine boost at Oceania Coffee. Line up at JC's Daily Bread Gourmet Artisan Bakery. "We have Butterscotch Bread, Italian Melody Bread and Ode to Hippy Bread," said Kim Walters of Port St. Lucie, manning the booth. And what exactly is hiding in Ode to Hippy bread? "It has seven different nuts, raisins, cranberries , granola, chocolate and raw hemp seeds," she said. The Hribernik family, Mike, Heidi and toddler son Waylon of]upiter, said it was a great way to spend the afternoon. "It was nice to be able to walk through the market, and since we have a baby, there's the park. It's a wonderful asset to the community," said Heidi. 'We were surprised that the food looked so good." Mike said. "Next time, we're going to have lunch here." @neighborhood@pbpost.com 2 of 4 3/29/2012 8:56 AM nttp:naigrta.oi vesottware.corrvu uveivlir.irai mtseacnro svrrmtc:o...
