' TEQUESTA FIRE DEPARTMENT
Pet-FriendlyAnimal Emergency Response/Rescue
Mission: To provide emergency ambulatory care & transport service primarily for injured dogs
& cats to licensed veterinary professionals in tfie designated service area on a 24/7 basis.
Background: After careful investigation, it was determined that there was a void in
comprehensive emergency ambulatory care for the residents of Teques, other than the over-
burdened Palm Beach County Animai Control facility located in suburban West Palm Beach, a
half-hour or more away from the Ilage. In the past, Tequesta emergency services (police &
fire) were solely dependent upon volurrtary veterinarian response to their call for voluntary
assistance & transport. Recently, the Ilage chose to investigate and determine if there was a
better, more balanced way to improve the emergency senrices for pet dog and rat extended-
family members of equesta residents. Tequesta's Marine-85 Fire/Rescue asset will be
involved on the water.
Action Plan 1: The Tequesta Ilage Council and staff are investigafing sensible alternatives
along with seeking advice and guidance from Veterinary professionals from leading Veterinary
Medical schools as well as local Veterinarians ftom the greater Tequesta-Jupiter area.
Action Plan 2: The Tequesta Fire Chiefi and his Fre-Rescue staff have already equipped their
emergency vehides with customized face masks for delivering oxygen to animafs sufFering from
smoke inhalation at fire calls in their response area. The Fire/Rescue command staff intend to
train all of their Paramedic and EMT personnel on the correct procedures for administering CPR
as well as basic first responder care in the event of a vehicle accident or fire response within the
Ilage's response area. The Tequesta police department will most likely be the first on-scene
and consequently also be included in the emergency care training program.
Action Pian 3: The Tequesta Vitlage Manager along with the Ilage Fire Chief are investigating
the equipping and staffing of a speual ambulance dedicated to the safe emergency transport of
injured animals to participating host Veterinarians within the greater Tequesta-Jupiter response
area, given the chance that a Tequesta resident may need assistance and safe emergency
transport outside o# the Ilage of Tequesta.
Action Plan 4: Establish a strategic alliance with the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter for all
other animal activity.
