The Councit on Aging's new hame at the Charles and I2ae Kane Center on Salerno
Ioad was desfgned ta give more good years to the fit c.s well as tl7e frail. Having rnore ond
years can be a complex blend of health care, fitness, nutrition and social suport. For• the
irst time in the Council's 38 year history, seniors can have access to these four necessary
components for successful agi under one roof at the Kane Center.
Geritric Health Care The Council on Aging has partnered with Uoth Martin
Health Svstem (MHS) and the Retirement Research Foundation in creating a geriatric-
specialty practice within the Kane Center for Treasure Coast seniors. MHS has completeIy
outfitted the three exam rooms in the Kane Clinic as well as contributed needed computers,
phones and disposable medical supplies for the first year of operation.
For two days a week, the Council is leasing the services of a Martin Health System
einployee — Internist and Board Certified Geriatrician, Laura Berinr. Dr. Beringer is a
graduate of the University of Miami Medical SchooL She rotated through the Internal Medicine
Residency Program at Jackson Meinorial Hospital's Miller School of Medicine. And, Dr.
Beringer completed her fellowship training for geriatrics through the Miami VA Healthcare
System.
For the first year, the cost of Dr. Beringer's time is being underwritten by a grant to the
Council from the Retirement Research Foundation. This Foundation, endowed by the late John
D. MacArtliur, is underwriting roughly half of the costs for clinic operation for the first year.
Whv aeriatric clinic at the Kane Center? You fish where the fish are. Where better to
louse a clinic specializing in geriatric evaluation and management than a center which offers
multiple services fr both fit and frail seniors?
Why is geriatric care relevant? Because geriatric evaluation and management has been
shovm to improve important yualitv of life issues. There was a controlled study done of hoth
inpatients and outpatients at 11 Veteran Affairs medical centers. Seniors receiving geriatric care
had sianificant reductions in functional decline and snificant improvernent in mental
health...i.e., more good years
Two-ear goals for the clinic: 1) Increase access to llealth care services through a
geriatric-specialty clinic located within the Kane Centr. 2) Become a self-suportin c linic
through Medicare and supplerriental insurance reimbursement as well as self-ay fees for service.
4) Create a model that other senior service centers can replicate.

Fitness Balance muscle strength and flexibilitare important to maintain because
falls and resultin disability axe hu?e issues as one ages.
According to the Anierican Geriatrics Society, over a third of seniors living; at home
suffer a fall over the course of one vear. For those seniors who have a history of a fall, two-
thirds will suffer a second fall within a year. And, only half of those who fall will be able to get
up without help.
In an article from the Journal of the Medical Library Association, falls are one of the
primary causes of emerency care and hospitalization for seniors. And, complications due to
falls are the leadin cause of death due to injury for this population group.
In a study done by the School of Medicine at UCLA, the most promisin fall prevention
strategies include exercise intervention. In other words, use it or lose it.
At the Kane Center, the following beginner, intermediate and advanced exercise
classes are now available and open to the general public:
•"Chair"apga — Kripalu-based chair Yoga teaches breathing techniques,
meditation and yoga postures while using a chair for support;
• Tai Chi for Arthritis — Developed Uy Dr. Paul Lam and based on the "Sun" style of
Tai Chi, this strength and flexibiliiy program is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation;
• Senior Fitness — Using light hand weights and elastic bands, this program's focus is
on muscle range of motion, flexibility and coordination;
•"Living Younger" Yoa for Seniors — Kripalu-based Vinyasa Yoga integrates
alignment, strength, fluidity and breathing with a sensitivity to the participant's level
of flexibility and strength.
• Zumba Gold — Taught by a Zumba Gold certified instructor, this is a lower-impact
version of the popular Latin-dance inspired aerobic workout.
Exercise intervention maintains or improves balance muscle strenth and flexibility for
more oodyears.
Nutrition Amazingly, onl 17 percent of seniors consume a good qualit
according to a national survey done by the Centers for Disease Control. Poor nutrition can lead
to poorer health including delayed recovery from common illnesses, increased risk for inedical
and surgical complications, slower healing rates, plus increased readmission rates to the hospital. ,
According to Peggy O'Neill, MS, RD, LD/N and Vice President of Nutrition Services for
Independent Living Systems, many of the most prevalent chronic medical conditions, such as
diabetes and hypertension, are those for which nutritional interventions have been demonstrated
to be effective in improving health status. Or, like my grandmother used to say, "Good food is
good medicine."
For the rst time ever, the Council on A will be cookin the food it provides to
homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program. The commercial kitchen at the
Kane Center is a long-term investment in improving the diet and the health of every senior
served.
Chef Christopher Collier has been hired and tasked with preparing a minimum of 400
meals every weekday. In addition to Meals on Wheels and our adult day care center, free meals
are served at four senior dinin sites located in low-income areas in East Stuart, Indiantown, Port
Salerno and Jensen Beach.
Tke comnercial kitchen is also a vital part of the Kane Center's emergency shelter this
hurricane season. During shelter conditions, the kitchen will prepare and ervice rneals, siiacks
and drinks to 120 seniors who cannot evacuate the area due to lack of mobility or poverty.
Preparzng our own meals will give the Council more control over the cost, the menu, the
taste, the quality and the volume of the food served in our community.
The neediest and frailest among us deserve a og od cualitv diet, which can improve health
status for more ood vea.rs.
Soeial Support: For the fit as well as the frail, there are no good years without good
social support. Social support means: compassionate help when you need it and aceess to
what you find rewarding or meaningful in life. Tllat kind of support can be harder and harder
to coine by as we confront the challenges of aging.
For the family caregiver, increasing tiine spent with a dependent loved one excludes
you ever more frequently from former interests and contacts. Therefore, the Council on Aging is
partnering with both the Alzheimer's Association and Morse Life to provide care iv er support
groups and counseling. During support group sessions, caregivers are able to use the Council on
Aging's adult day care center to care for a loved one.
The Town Center at Kane houses a Careiver Resource Library, which has hundreds of
books to use as reference on a myriad of health challenges from Alzheimer's Disease to Thyroid
Disorders a.nd everything in between.
After the death of a spouse, the emotional adjustment of being alone can be extremely
daunting. For single seniors, the Kane Center represents a new and welcoming avenue to
beconle involved in the reater community, Renewing old interests or developing new ones
through Kane classes and clubs can be the bridge to a new life as a single senior. And,
volunteering at the Iane Center can expand the reach of your life through meeting new peole
and developing new relationships.
For those with mobility problems -- a cane, walker or a wheelchair can shrink access to
life outside the home. However, attendin concerts, events and activities poses no problems at
the Kane Center. The center seainlessly provides access and assistive devices as part of the
buildin design, which includes: automatic door openers, wide thresholds, a flat transition
between rooms and different flooring surfaces, boarder hand railings and the use of free electric
scooters. But, just as importantly, Council on Agin staff is sensitized to mobilit and a gin
issues. Staff is always happy to go the extra mile in providing responsive service to any i•equest
for assistance or special seating.
It is important to remember that social support can be relationships remain the last vestige
of our good years...even after health and fitness fail.
The dynamics of aging are claanging for the better in our community. Ad, that
clange is embodied in the programs and services at the Charles and Rae Kane Center.
