MEMORANDUM: TO: Village Council f FROM: Thomas G. Bradford, Village Manager DATE: November 10, 1993 SUBJECT: BRITT Request for Contribution of $5000 for FY 1993/94; Agenda Item Attached hereto, please find a copy of correspondence dated October 25, 1993, from Richard Valentine, Executive Director of BRITT, requesting a contribution of $5,000 for this fiscal year. The letter expounds upon the educational, cultural and promotional benefits to Tequesta by virtue of its operations. Also attached, please find a copy of Tequesta Resolution No. 11- 90/91, expressing appreciation and support to BRITT and adopted in March of 1991. BRITT is a major cultural and educational facility located within our Village. It has an annual budget of $950,000 and pays property taxes of $18,000 of which, approximately, 25 goes to Tequesta. BRITT is beneficial to the Village and its citizens, they promote our community and they need our help. The State of Florida Uniform Accounting Code allows for community expenditures for cultural activities. In this regard, Tequesta spends nothing. $5,000 is a small price to pay to support cultural activities. You can anticipate being requested to spend the same in the future to support the Lighthouse Gallery. It is recommended that the Village Council authorize a contribution for Fiscal Year 1993/94 to BRITT in the amount of $5,000 and direct staff to bring forward the necessary budget amendment, at the appropriate time, to provide funding for the same. In an industry where 8% of union members are working, over 85 % of our graduates are employed. This season we have doubled the size of our resident company of students and now have 19 talented young professionals from all over the country. BRITT is the only major non-profit performing arts group in North county. With our very active Young Actors Guild, our teen workshops are fully enrolled and we have more than 140 Volunteers in Production. We employ 10 full time and 3 part time staff, several adjunct faculty, in addition to actors, directors, designers, and technicians hired for each production, most all from this area. We pay the yearly property taxes of $18,000. The Tequesta Theatre operates on a year-around basis with 7 mainstage and b children's theatre productions in season. Our '93 summer season was virtually sold-out attracting over 5,000 patrons to the Village! Revenue from ticket sales generates only 50% of our $950,000 expense budget and we must therefore depend upon donations and contributions for the remainder. We have produced a top-quality musical rewe entitled Opening Doors for presentation to tourists, convention groups and residents from Vero to Miami. The Village of Tequesta is featured prominently - and favorably with lyrics such as "I like the village Tequesta: snowbirds come down arrd siesta!" We advertise locally and nationally as BRITT or The Burt Reynolds Theatre, a non profit theatre in the Yillage of Tequesta. VEith addiiional support from the Village we would like to announce each presentation of Opening Doors as being "Sponsored in part by the Village of Tequesta" and to regularly advertise and promote it as such. BRITT and Tequesta can indeed promote one another. A.s an investment in our community and our quality of life, we are asking Council to consider increasing the annual llage financial commitment to BRIT"T to $5,000 this year. Thank you for your continued support. Since 1 , .,, . Richard A. V entine Executive Director RAV/bjc i , .
