HomeMy WebLinkAboutHandouts_Workshop_Tab 03_02/02/2015 US-1 Traffic Issues:
1. There is not enough left turning capacity for northbound vehicles
turning from Alternate AIA onto US-1. This occurs nearly every
day during the evening rush hour. The backup of left turning
vehicles aggravates the congestion by restricting the movement of
drivers wanting to turn left onto Old Dixie Highway. The
northbound backup often reaches the Riverside Drive traffic
signal at the foot of the Loxahatchee River Bridge.
The left turn signal only operates for 30 seconds while the thru
lane continues for the full minute. Some frustrated northbound
drivers are now opting to take the thru lanes to Jupiter Island,
then doing a U-turn in the wide pavement east of US-1, returning
to the intersection and turning right (northbound).
How can we increase the left turning capacity?
2. When the "on demand" Jupiter-Federal Bridge is UP the
southbound US-1 traffic frequently backs up thru the US-1/Alt.
A1A intersection. The same is not true for vehicles eastbound
over the Jupiter Island Bridge on SR 707 (Beach Road) as there is
less traffic and longer queing distance on this road.
How can we improve the diversion of southbouad US-1 traffic
to Alternate A1A during bridge openings?
3. Alternate A1A northward from Center Street currently has both
paved shoulders (substandard bicycle lanes) and sidewalks in
each direction - including over the Loxahatchee River Bridge.
Cyclists use either at their own risk. However, all substandard
cycling lanes drop out at the Alternate A1A/US-1 intersection.
There are currently no dedicated bike lanes on US-1 in either
direction, nor on SR 707 (Beach Road). There is heavy cycling
traffic in this area, especially on weekends.
US-1 from County Line Roaci south To Ocean Boulevard
requires improvements to meet cycling safety standards.

4. There is a perception that free-flowing traff'ic on US-1 from
Alternate A1A north to County Line Road is traveling at excessive
speeds. Pedestrians and impaired individuals are having difficulty
crossing from one side to the other. There are currently only
three marked pedestrian crossings (Alt. A1A; Tequesta Drive;
County Line Road) within the US-I study area. This is inadeyuate!
We need to strive for uniform, safe travel speeds on US-1
while improving the frequency, geometrics and signal timing
of crossings to ensure pedestrian safety.

thru lane is not needed to Jupiter Island. Increase left turn timing to 45 seconds (it's 30 now)
Westbound SR 707 at 2 Left turn, 2 Thru,1 Right only (no bike lane) 1 Left turn, 2 Thru, Right only, add bike lane
US-1 intersection
There is no need for 2 dedicated left turn lanes; There is no pavement changes. Signal modifications
It is doubtful that 2 thru lanes are needed and curbing are required.
Southbound US-1 at 1Left turn, 3 Thru,1 Right only (no bike lane) 1Left turn, 2 Thru, 2 Right turn only, add bike lane
Alt. A1A intersection
The 3 thru lanes must converge to 2 in 1400' The 2 thru lanes align with Jup-Federal bridge; the
prior to the bridge existing pavement south of the intersection is used
to merge Right turns from Alt. A1A. Double Right
turn lanes operate as "NO RIGHT ON RED"; this
provides turning gaps from cars turning north from
Alt. A1A to Old Dixie. Double Right will allow more
turns during the "green" cycle; the Right turn
signal should be green on bridge openings.
Northbound US-1 at Alt. 1 Left turn, 3 Thru,1 Right only (no bike lane) 1 Left turn, 2 Thru,1 Right only, add bike lane
A1A/707 intersection
There are no driveways or other entries between
The current Right turn lane is very short the Jupiter-Federal Bridge and Alt. A1A intersection.
Let thru trafFic remain 2 lanes coming from the
bridge. After they clear the intersection they can
relocate for right turns as necessary. Use the third
lane for a longer right turn lane and to create a
bike lane. There are no significant pavement
changes.
