This order consists of the following numbered sections:

PURPOSE:
To identify those sworn positions and specialized assignments within the department that, by
nature of their duties, requires specialized training and expertise to accomplish the tasks of the position or
assignment.
SCOPE:
This order applies to all Police Department members.
POLICY:
This department assumes the policy of utilizing specially trained personnel to perform special
functions in meeting the department’s law enforcement goals, objectives, and mission. Specialization in
law enforcement has become necessary for the efficient delivery of certain police services and to reduce the
agency’s exposure to liability in other areas of operation. Providing basic training prior to, or immediately
after, assignment to a specialized position creates a greater job satisfaction for the employee and greater
effectiveness in service delivery.
PROCEDURE:
I. OBJECTIVES:
A. Training Development:
Training for specialized assignments will be developed by the department
and/or selected from outside sources to:
1.
Develop or enhance the skills, knowledge, and abilities particular to the specialty;
2.
Familiarize the personnel with the policies, procedures, rules and regulations specific to the
assignment;
3.
Provide supervised on-the-job training within the assignment;
B.Training Performance:
Specialized training will be conducted, for those areas not requiring pre-
training, as soon as possible after the officer receives the assignment, preferably within thirty days after
assignment.
II. SPECIALIZED ASSIGNMENTS REQUIRING TRAINING:

A. Training Required Prior to Assignment:
1.
Field Training Officer. Certified FTO course.
2.
Bicycle Officer. Recognized police bicycle operation course.
3.
Traffic Homicide Investigator. CJSTC or IPTM traffic homicide investigation course.
4.
Detective. Interviews and Interrogations.
5.
Marine Officer. Recognized boaters safety course.
B. Training desired, prior to assignment:
1.
Crime Scene Investigator. Specialized training will be provided to all crime
scene investigations personnel to develop the following skills:
a. Recovery of latent and patent prints utilizing chemical and accepted methodology.
b. Recovery of foot and tire impressions.
c. Crime scene photography techniques.
d. Preparing crime scene sketches.
e. Collection, preservation, identification, and transmitting physical evidence, including biological
and serological materials.
6.
Crime Prevention Officer. Florida crime prevention training institute courses.
7.
Public Information Officer.
a. Public Information Officer course.
C. Specialized training of civilian positions may include:
1.
Dispatchers.
