Biannual report of the Computers for Kids program of Jupiter-Tequesta Rotary Club.
History: In April of 2005 we were approached by Mr. Dan Pecararo, a science teacher of John F
Kennedy Middle School of Riviera Beach, who had a dream to improve his students learning by pro-
viding repaired used compu#ers for them to have at home to practice .what they had started at
school. The computer equipment delivered to him has been repaired and passed on to deserving
and trying students over the past two years
Our job is to locate, pick up, and deliver the equipment to the school whenever they have room to
accept and work on repairs. During the first year of operation the space available for the computers
was in Mr. Pecarafo's class room, certainly not a convenient arrangement. Also he had made an
arrangement with a high school teacher in Boynton Beach who taught computer repair who would
have his students make the repairs needed to gain experience. Unfortunately the teacher was
moved to another teaching assignment and the job came back to Mr Pecararo
During the second year of operation a new school was built and now there is a room available for
working on the equipment.
Location: The JFK Middle School is located at 1901 Ave. S, Riviera Beach, F133404 and has a
second entrance that opens on to Blue Heron Blvd. It is a magnet school that has a very good
teaching staff but a very poor population to serve. Special help that is being provided by our pro-
gram is expected to give these students a lift and better ability to compete with others in the market
place for jobs.
Numbers: During the past 2 years we have collected:
122 Computers 86 Monitors 94 Keboards 63 Mice
67 Printers 8 Scanners 20 Speaker Sets
During the past 2 years we have delivered:
93 Computers 41 Monitors 45 Keyboards 46 Mice
28 Printers 5 Scanners 4 Speaker Sets
Equipment Inventory on hand:
4 Computers 16 Monitors 4 Keyboards
12 Printers 2 Speaker Sets 9 Gel! Phones
1 Phone-Fax-Copier
Not included in the inventory are many boxes of cables,
program disks, books, swivel bases for monitors, and all
sorts of ancillary materials that come with the computer
donations. Thus we accept nearly everything that is
offered and only discard those materials that we cannot
use or which are not suitable for repair. Part of the

equipment is discarded by our collection team and part is discarded by Mr. Pecararo when he finds that
repair is not possible or to expensive to do. This is explaination for the difference in computers accepted
from our suppliers and the number delivered to the school. Of those received by the school and addi-
tional drop in amount delivered to students is due to unreparable machines when they are tested.
Cost: The expense of this project is minimal. It includes travel expense by the committee to pick up
equipment and deliver it, Time involved in finding and picking up computers, visiting clubs and organi-
zatons to request their discarded computers and office expense.
Plan: Our immediate plan is to set up a new contact plan to reach out for more computers. The only
"advertising" we have done in two years was direct contact with 8 local rotary clubs. After the initial 2
months of contacts, the phone has been busy with offers of computers from Delray Beadh to Merritt
Island. Now that we will be needing more than are coming to us now, we will need a promotion to make
the contacts we need to reinforce our original effort and to make new contacts that will build our supply
to the needed level.
One of our problems is storage from pickup to delivery to the school. At present my garage has served
as a waypoint in this travel. This space has limits and sometimes is not capable of handling the large
number of computers that can be expected if the promotion is begun.
We plan to continue operations as a committee and to provide all the equipment that can be used at
this school. This should not make a change in the club involvement in the project. However, there have
been several ideas suggested to us that could require a change in our operations and in the expenses
incurred.
The first idea is that we offer this same service to other local schools. This would require expansion of
our area of operations and individual contacts needed to make it a success.
The second idea is to request a share of our governments discarded machines. If this could be enacted
there would be little need to go far afield for our supplies.
Awards: The attached photo is taken during a
presentation award ceremony of a computer for
each of thes two students. Shaquille is the stu- .~"'"~

dent on the left, and Brandy is the student on the
right . Mr Pecararo is in the background and is .; _
the moving force that activated the program and
the one who continues to make it functiion.
Thanks: We wish to thank the Rotary Coub of
Jupiter-Tequesta-Juno for their continued support
of the valuable and rewarding experience to pro-
vide areal boost to the students of this school. I
am sure that there are other schools that could

Dear Fellow Floridian,
Deep in the Computer revolution we feel that we can use this machine for everything. It encom-
passes our lives in everything we do and wen the computers are down, nothing gets done. So it is
vital that our children learn early and thoroughly how to use these tools in making our living. For the
most part this has been successful and w know that the younger that our children learn to use the
computer the easier life will treat them.
There are a group of children who are unable to learn fast enough to keep abreast with their
peers because they do not have enough access to the computer. To solve this we need to provide
computers at a young age and let them grow with it. To do this we are asking for old and used com-
puters that can be refurbished for use of deserving children.
We are asking you to give us your old unused computers that we can repair and update for use
by school age children. They are given to select students on the basis on need and at no cost to
the student. For this we herein acknowledge the gift with a receipt that will make 'it possible for you
to claim a deduction on you tax return. Please help us to do this service for our young students.
Sincerely, W.J.Bean, Chair
